Business of Medicine

As the healthcare industry changes and evolves, there is a need to find passionate, seasoned and skilled physicians with in-depth knowledge of healthcare’s particular needs and challenges to lead the way forward. That’s why we’ve created a Business in Medicine rotation.

This rotation is offered to senior residents in preparation for joining a practice after graduation. It readies graduates to rise to the challenges posed by today’s complex and constantly evolving healthcare industry. Coursework in general business management principles, accounting and strategic planning, in addition to experiences specifically tailored toward work in the healthcare industry, such as health policy, legal principles and ethics.

We emphasize leadership and communication skills, as well as learning the language of medical administration. The curriculum includes modules on billing and coding, healthcare finance and human resources. We envision some of our graduates seeking progressive management career opportunities while maintaining a clinical practice.

Educational Goals and Objectives

• Develop residents’ leadership skills and complement their existing experience as a physician leader or healthcare manager.
• Learn new ways to improve healthcare from the executive level with a thematic approach that focuses on the most important aspects of leadership and healthcare delivery.
• Predict future trends in medicine, including future payment models, physician employment, and delivery methods.
• Help prepare residents for their future job search with help writing their CV, interview preparation, mock interviews, and negotiation skills.
