“I’m not a big fan of dieting,” says Shayna Komar, a licensed and registered dietitian at Thomas F. Chapman Family Cancer Wellness at Piedmont. “Instead, I believe that you can eat healthier. You can actually get power and energy from your food.”
Healthy foods fuel your body and provide the right balance of nutrients to help you feel better throughout the day.
Why are you eating healthily?
“When you eat, it’s important to think about your motivation,” Komar says.
Are you eating to have more energy, reduce stress or lose weight? Decide what’s most important to you, and choose the right balance of healthy foods to accomplish your goal.
For example, almonds, eggs and oatmeal provide a steady source of energy throughout the day. And leafy greens are full of iron, which can help you feel more alert and improve concentration levels.
Mindful eating
“When you eat, it’s important to practice mindful eating,” Komar explains. “That’s when you’re actually thinking about what you’re putting into your mouth.”
Listen to your body before and during meals, and pay attention to when you feel full.
“Remember, food is fun,” Komar says. “Sometimes we overeat. Sometimes we under-eat. But the most important thing is to create a balance in your day. And that is how you can eat healthily.”
