While exercise and a healthy diet are key to stress management and good overall health, there are several mind-body techniques you can incorporate to reduce stress. Jasmin Theard, ACSM HFS, an exercise physiologist at Piedmont Atlanta Fitness Center, recommends these simple tips to her clients. Give them a try next time you are feeling overwhelmed or anxious.
1. Practice gratitude
Start each day by reflecting on the things for which you are grateful.
2. Set reasonable goals
Let go of an ‘all-or-nothing’ attitude, whether you are at the office or the gym. Set manageable goals so you aren’t overwhelmed.
3. Get away from it all
Take a weekend getaway – preferably somewhere where you’ll have limited access to technology. If you can’t get out of town, you can reap similar benefits by taking a technology break each day. Power down your smartphone and laptop for at least an hour each night.
4. Be mindful of your attitude.
“A lot of stress management has to do with your attitude and perspective,” she says. “Look at any progress, no matter how small, and celebrate small victories.” For more healthy lifestyle ideas, visit Health & Wellness.
