Shea Hammontree decided to have a home birth with the assistance of a lay midwife, as she had a negative experience in a hospital during a previous pregnancy. However, due to unexpected complications, she needed to seek emergency care at Piedmont Mountainside, even though she hadn't attended any prenatal appointments beforehand.
Although initially apprehensive about receiving hospital care, Shea quickly realized she was in excellent hands. After delivering her baby safely, Shea's condition rapidly worsened due to severe bleeding. Following intensive surgery, Shea recovered in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and later returned to the care of the Labor and Delivery staff, who not only provided expert medical attention but also compassionate personal care. The team even went out of their way to purchase special snacks tailored to Shea's dietary needs.
