Piedmont Macon North Hospital Opens 'Stone Center'

Macon, Ga. (July 11, 2024) – Piedmont Macon North Hospital has opened a new in-house “stone center” that offers state-of-the-art laser-guided lithotripsy to treat kidney stones.

The first laser procedure was performed in late June by urologists from the Piedmont Macon North medical staff. Laser lithotripsy has several benefits, including giving physicians greater visibility and access to perform stone removal, shorter procedure times, faster patient recovery times and fewer complications.

“It’s very rewarding to be able to offer a best practice to the patients we serve at Piedmont Macon North, where they will receive the latest in stone care without having to leave our community,” said Piedmont Macon Chief Operating Officer Scott Strong.

The laser technology is just the first step in enhancing urology services at Piedmont Macon North. Strong said a state-of-the-art urology table will soon be added to better serve patients. The table, known as the Uroskop Omnia Max, offers a host of upgrades from the previous urology table used in the operating room. Among its capabilities:

  • Crystal clear imaging, providing for more accurate examinations and interventions for patients.
  • Reduced examination and surgical times.
  • A design that offers a better field of view and vantage point for doctors, allowing for more precision by physicians.

Strong said he’s excited about the enhanced urology services being offered at Piedmont Macon North and said the goal of the improved urology care “is to have the most comprehensive imaging within our OR suite.”
