Piedmont Fayette’s Robotic Surgery Program Earns Top Designations

Fayetteville, Ga. (January 8, 2024) – Piedmont Fayette Hospital has earned accreditation from Surgical Review Corporation (SRC) as a Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery. The accreditation recognizes Piedmont Fayette’s dedication to delivering high-quality, compassionate patient care with an emphasis on safety.

“We received two designations for multi-specialty robotics that covers general robotic assisted surgeries and soon to be orthopedic robotic assisted surgeries,” said Steve Porter, CEO of Piedmont Fayette. “It’s a testament to the consistently outstanding work of our surgeons and surgical services team, as well as our focus on using the most advanced technology available.”

In the past, many of the surgical procedures that the hospital now performs with robotic assistance required one large incision to grant the surgeon access to a particular area of the body to allow them to work. Now, the surgeon can make several small incisions to gain even better access. In addition to the robotic arms that can move 360 degrees, the system also provides an HD camera that grants the surgeon an incredible depth of vision and a three-dimensional view of the area they are working on.

Among the benefits of robotic surgery are:

  • Decreased blood loss
  • Reduced risk of infection
  • Less pain and scarring
  • Shorter hospital stays
  • Faster recovery time

Status as an accredited robotic center of excellence means that Piedmont Fayette has met nationally and international recognized standards. Healthcare facilities and surgeons seeking SRC accreditation must undergo an extensive assessment and inspection process to ensure they meet SRC’s proven standards and requirements. These requirements include surgical volumes, facility equipment, clinical pathways, standardized operating procedures, an emphasis on patient education and continuous quality assessment. Inspectors educate staff on best practices to help an organization improve its care and services.

In addition to Piedmont Fayette earning the Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery accreditation, nine surgeons at the hospital have achieved the designation of Surgeon of Excellence. They are John Abbott, M.D, Dennis Choat, M.D., Mitzie-Ann Davis, M.D., James Franklin, M.D., Elizabeth Killebrew, M.D., James Stevens, M.D., Heather Turner, M.D., Russell Wilson, M.D. and Kevin Yang M.D.
