Piedmont Cartersville Congestive Heart Failure Clinic Introduces CardioMEMS Technology to Area

Cartersville, Ga (April 21, 2025) - Piedmont Cartersville is proud to announce the introduction of CardioMEMS at its Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) clinic, marking a significant advancement in heart failure management. CardioMEMS is a small sensor placed in a patient's pulmonary artery that measures pulmonary artery pressure. This cutting-edge device enables doctors to monitor the progression of heart failure and adjust medications promptly, offering a proactive approach to managing the disease.

Dr. Maxwell Agyemang Prempeh, a board-certified cardiologist at Piedmont Cartersville, commented on the new technology: "The introduction of CardioMEMS at our clinic is a significant advancement in heart failure management. This technology allows us to monitor our patients more closely and adjust treatments promptly, ultimately improving their quality of life and reducing hospital readmissions."

Dr. Digant Virendrakumar Bhatt, another esteemed cardiologist at Piedmont Cartersville, added: "CardioMEMS represents a transformative step in managing patients with heart failure. We can intervene earlier and more effectively by continuously monitoring pulmonary artery pressure, which is crucial for our patients' long-term health. We are really happy and excited to offer this service to the Bartow County community."

The CHF clinic at Piedmont Cartersville has been a beacon of hope for patients battling heart failure for over five years. With a mission to improve quality of life, slow disease progression, and prevent hospital readmissions, the clinic serves approximately 200 patients each month. Patients at the clinic are monitored for fluid overload, shortness of breath, and leg swelling. Those with New York Heart Association (NYHA) Class II or Class III heart failure, experiencing mild to moderate symptoms and physical limitations, may qualify for the innovative CardioMEMS technology. Additionally, patients who have been hospitalized and are at high risk of future hospitalizations stand to benefit significantly from this technology.

On Tuesday, April 8, 2025, Piedmont Cartersville Hospital marked a significant milestone. The CHF clinic, under the leadership of Dr. Bhatt, collaborated with Dr. Prempeh to successfully perform the hospital's first CardioMEMS procedure. The patient, who experienced mild sedation and no pain, was able to return home just one hour after the procedure. The clinic remains dedicated to extending the lives of its patients and enhancing their quality of life.

CardioMEMS offers several significant benefits for managing heart failure. It provides real-time pulmonary artery pressure monitoring, enabling early intervention before symptoms worsen. This proactive approach can improve patients' quality of life and reduce hospital readmissions. The system is minimally invasive, involving a simple catheter-based procedure with mild sedation.

The introduction of CardioMEMS at the Piedmont Cartersville CHF clinic promises better outcomes and enhanced care for patients in the area. For more information about CardioMEMS and to find out if you or a loved one may qualify, please visit our website at www.piedmont.org.
