Athens, Ga. (October 22, 2024) – Across the country there is an explosion of pink as people and places do their part to raise breast health awareness during October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. At Piedmont Athens Regional, education on the importance of getting annual screening mammograms and promoting breast health takes place all year; however, in October, the volume gets turned up on the pink.

Piedmont Athens Regional’s Breast Health Center, located on the main hospital campus in the Medical Services Building, provides comprehensive breast health services, and has completed nearly 30,000 screening and diagnostic procedures so far this year. To accommodate the growing number of patients, Piedmont Athens Regional recently completed a $210,000 renovation of the center, funded by donations to the Breast Health Center through the Piedmont Athens Regional Foundation, creating a more relaxing and spa-like atmosphere for patients. Piedmont Athens recommends that all women age 40 and above gets an annual screening mammogram. Mammograms are an excellent tool in the early detection of breast cancer. Also located in the Medical Services Building at Piedmont Athens Regional is the Beautiful You Boutique. The Beautiful You Boutique is a cancer wellness boutique specializing in products for women who have had or are going to have breast surgery. The boutique also has an extensive selection of retail items supporting the fight against breast cancer, and many other types of cancer, and was launched as an outreach to serve patients, in particularly women, diagnosed with cancer. Opened in December 2018, the Beautiful You Boutique has assisted more than 450 patients with services such as fittings for post-mastectomy products, compression garments for lymphedema, and wigs. Patients and care givers can find support and comfort at the boutique.

Piedmont Athens Regional also partners with community organizations such as Tanger Outlets to raise awareness and support the fight against breast cancer. Each October, Tanger Outlets offers shopper the chance to purchase a Pink savings card to use throughout the month in participating stores. The cards are $10 and proceeds from the Pink cards will benefit the Breast Health Center at Piedmont Athens Regional and local women experiencing a breast cancer diagnosis.
