It’s a common predicament for many people: an injury or illness that occurs when your primary care physician’s office is closed. Perhaps you come down with the flu over the weekend or your child sprains his or her ankle at after school soccer practice. The ailment may not be serious enough to warrant an emergency room visit, but it could require medical attention.
Whether you want to rule out a fracture or get your fever under control, that’s where Piedmont Primary & Immediate Care comes in. The practice specializes in both family medicine and immediate care, and can treat every member of the family. Joseph DeVeau, M.D. says the clinic can treat non-life-threatening conditions that occur outside of your primary doctor’s regular hours.
“Immediate care can treat things like colds, sinus infections, sore throats, sprains or strains,” he explains. “For conditions such as chest pain (where they need to do blood work and get results right away), fractures or life-threatening conditions, that’s a more appropriate use of an emergency care setting.” Immediate Care’s team consists of a medical director, nurse practitioner, physician’s assistant, nurses and medical assistants.

“This is a really important endeavor both for the community and for healthcare in general,” says Dr. DeVeau. “When primary care doctors are unavailable, people have had to go to the emergency department for lower acuity needs. Those people are waiting eight hours and for those patients with more serious illnesses, they’re not able to get the care that they need. So that’s the whole strategy of opening a clinic like this, where we can take care of lower acuity needs in a timely manner, so you’re not waiting for hours.”
Dr. DeVeau says there are multiple advantages to visiting an immediate care clinic in lieu of the emergency department if you do not have a serious condition. “We have extended hours, so we are open in the mornings, afternoons and evenings, Monday through Friday,” he says. “We even have hours on Saturdays and Sundays.
For those occurrences where you have a sore throat on Saturday and you don’t want to wait until you can see your primary care doctor on Monday, we’re here for those acute needs.”
