“I was halfway through school and realized I hadn’t declared a major yet,” says Karen Carter, RN, a critical care nurse at Piedmont Henry Hospital. As she reviewed her school’s list of available majors, the nursing program caught her eye. While it wasn’t something she had ever considered, she was intrigued by the physiology and psychological aspects of the field.
The science focus, combined with her love for people, made nursing the perfect career path for Carter. “I realized I found my calling,” she says. Nursing is a challenging and stressful job, often with early mornings and late nights to meet patients’ needs. Despite the challenges, Carter says her work is meaningful. “Being able to see patients do well and being there to support their families definitely makes it all worthwhile,” she says.
