Out-of-the-box emergency tips

When faced with natural disasters and other emergencies, most people have the basics covered, such as food, batteries, medicine, water and communication. We compiled a list of lesser-known tips that many people don’t consider, but that can make you and your family safer and more comfortable during an emergency situation.

If you have a bathtub and buckets … fill them with water. You’ll have a source if you need water to flush the toilet.

If you have a flashlight … get a headlamp. You probably have flashlights in your emergency kit, but headlamps are even better because they allow you to keep your hands free. You can even wrap your headlamp around a gallon of water for a brighter light source.

If you can’t take a shower … use baby wipes. If the power goes out, you won't be able to take a hot shower, so stash wet wipes in your emergency kit.

If you have a barbecue grill, patio furniture or yard art … store and secure them before bad weather hits. An outdoor object can become a dangerous projectile in heavy winds. Make sure you have access to your grill, however – it can be used for thawing and cooking meat if needed.

If you have an outdoor fan … remove the blades. Blades can easily become detached and cause damage during strong storms.

If you have a smartphone … delete all unnecessary apps and messages. Extra frills on your phone can drain the battery faster. Charge your phone while you can and download an app from your local or state emergency agency.

If you have a pantry (or just a kitchen cabinet) … stock it with nonperishable food in easy-open containers, such as canned and dried fruit, granola bars, nuts, canned meat, beef jerky, peanut butter, bread, cookies and cereal.
