As we usher in a new autumn season, Angela Buttimer, MS, NCC, RYT, LPC, a licensed psychotherapist at Cancer Wellness at Piedmont, says it can be an opportunity to honor the cycles of life.
“We sometimes want everything to stay the same, but life is impermanent and things are always changing,” says Buttimer. “As humans, we often fear and resist change. Fall reminds us that the seasons are in a natural order and all is still well.”
Here are a few ways to celebrate the shift in seasons and get inspired in your daily life.
1. Honor the circadian rhythms
“We know following the circadian rhythms is important for our health, particularly our immune system,” says Buttimer. “But often, we allow technology to dictate our rhythms.”
She recommends waking up with the sunrise and getting exposure to sunlight as the sun rises in the morning.
“When you get out while the sun is rising without sunscreen, you’ll develop melatonin and sleep better,” says Buttimer. “Even just five to 10 minutes is beneficial.”
As the sun sets earlier in the evening, it’s a signal to start winding down. You might even consider eating dinner and going to bed earlier in the fall and winter months.
“If we can pay attention to these rhythms, we can have better health,” she says.
2. Spend more time in nature
Nature can do wonders for your mental and physical health. If you find yourself spending more time indoors during the hot summer months, make an effort to get outdoors during the cooler fall months. Here are some ideas:
-
Go for a morning or evening walk.
-
Plan a weekend hike.
-
Go forest bathing.
-
Dine al fresco.
-
Play with your kids or pets outside.
-
Stroll the farmers market.
-
Visit your local apple orchard or pumpkin patch.
3. Wear cozy fall clothing
Dressing for the season can boost your spirits.
“We feel our best when we dress our best,” says Buttimer. “Fall clothing is often kinesthetically pleasing, soft and cozy.”
Throw on your favorite sweater, sweatshirt, wrap or scarf to feel instantly cozier and relaxed.
4. Enjoy seasonal fall events
Look for events in your neighborhood or community, such as harvest, Halloween or Thanksgiving celebrations. Check your city’s event calendar, community center, place of worship, favorite restaurants or farmers market for seasonal activities near you.
5. Make autumn-inspired recipes
Eating seasonally is good for your body and soul. Try one of these festive, tasty recipes:
6. Go for a drive
No matter where you live, there’s likely something beautiful to behold. Go for a drive to see the colorful fall foliage or check out your neighborhood’s fall and Halloween décor.
7. Get cozy
If you love to curl up with a book, movie, blanket and cup of tea, this is your time to shine. Diffuse fall-scented essential oils, sip a mug of your favorite hot beverage and enjoy a healthy treat. Really lean into what you love about the cooler mornings and evenings, crisp blue skies and vibrant autumn leaves.
“Fall is such a comforting season and participating in natural fall activities is a great way to celebrate,” says Buttimer.
