Mitral in MAC in Patient With High Risk of LVOT Obstruction
At Piedmont Heart’s iMAGINE 3-D Echo 360 Conference in Atlanta, Dr. Christopher Meduri shares a challenging case of a 76-year-old female at extreme risk for open heart surgery because of a porcelain aorta. Dr. Meduri explains the key role imaging and planning involved in her treatment for severe aortic stenosis and mitral stenosis with mitral annual calcification. Weighing the risks and benefits, the Marcus Heart Valve Center team proceeded first with a successful TAVR procedure. When the patient faced recurrent dyspnea 6 months later, the team was able to get FDA approval for a novel treatment approach – using the Lotus valve in the mitral position in a mitral MAC procedure. The patient reports “feeling like a new person” and can now walk for miles without having to stop for breath.
