Columbus, Ga. (January 7, 2025) – West Georgia and east Alabama residents with a state health plan benefit looking for surgical treatment of obesity have a nationally recognized choice for receiving high-quality care. Piedmont Columbus Regional Northside is the only hospital in the Chattahoochee Valley area to be named a Blue Distinction Center by Blue Cross Blue Shield for its metabolic and bariatric surgery program.
“We are very excited to receive this recognition for our safe and effective treatment options,” said metabolic bariatric surgeon Ken Copperwheat, D.O. “All employees with a state health plan, regardless if they live in Columbus, LaGrange, Americus or somewhere in between, can now receive bariatric surgery as part of their benefits because of Piedmont achieving this Blue Cross Blue Shield distinction.”
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates about 100 million adults, nearly 42%, in the United States are affected by obesity and that number continues to increase.
“Obesity increases risks of morbidity and mortality because of the diseases and conditions commonly associated with it, such as type II diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and cancer, among other health risks,” Dr. Copperwheat explains. “Metabolic and bariatric surgery has proven to be effective in the reduction of comorbid conditions related to obesity.”
